08. Glasgow Coma Scale

This scale allows the healthcare provider to trend a patient’s level of consciousness over time, by assessing three types of responsiveness: eye opening, verbal response, and motor response.  Each category is given a numerical score, and the patient’s GCS equals the sum of the three scores.  GCS scores range from 3 (totally unresponsive) to 15 (normal). Intubated patients are unable to produce verbal responses, so they are scored as the sum of their eye opening and motor responses.  This score is followed by a T and can range from 2T to 10T.
